Just in the interests of full disclosure, I am a childhood friend of Ms. Farnsworth's. When I learned via social media that Ann had a first novel shortly to be published I was so excited for her, and ordered my copy for which I waited anxiously! Once received, I ended up reading just pages per day over days (as opposed to the leisurely, escapist reading time that I crave), sometimes in the wee hours of the night/morning. That was totally frustrating because 1) "Throne" is a page-turner; 2) it is a fun, historical romp that rolled easily off the pages into a vivid, engaging thriller; but 3) I had to keep reviewing some of the history reminding myself to what "this and that thing, place, person" referred; and 4) I was absorbed by the appealing and interesting characters and the cross-continent stories so I really wanted to keep reading to find out "what happens." Well, even with my needful starts and stops...I loved it. I would so enjoy "another David Lord mystery" sequel -- a totally different story with the same protagonists and anti-hero -- there is one in the works, right, Ann? ;-) The criticisms that I will offer, merely as a humble reader, are that it was too short -- I wanted more backstory of characters; not a writing flaw, but a compliment that I wanted to know more about why these characters were honorable, or loyal, or lovable, etc. I was touched by the fantastical/spiritual bits although found them a bit too convenient in answer of plot needs. I enjoyed the threading love story but found it too simplistic because...the story was too short on character development thus the relationship was unsatisfying for me (another reason I want "another David Lord mystery," ha!). I'm regularly annoyed at editors and proofreaders, having caught 4-5 typos (in every book ever printed), and this was no exception. Ultimately, I offer my highest compliments to my old friend for writing an intriguing, unique, entertaining tale based on a true-life mystery -- a very impressive first thriller. I've started to read "Throne" again! In spite of my wishing for a longer story and more detail, I absolutely enjoyed it and want to review and re-absorb all of that incredible, convoluted British Isles' history!

The Throne of David Ann Farnsworth 9781462117147 Books Reviews

This book grabbed my attention from the first chapter. A story with real historical significance, the characters were likeable, there was just enough romance to keep me reading past my bedtime. I hope this author continues to thrill us with more books in the near future!
I read this book based on all the great reviews. It was captivating, spirited and intriguing. The language was clean ( much appreciated) and the mystery was awesome. Couldn't put it down until the last page and then was left hoping there would be another book by the same writer.
Quite a story, lots of twists and turns in the plot. Wove religion, history, and fiction into an enjoyable story.
Because this is a first novel, I didn't know what to expect. But right off the bat I noticed the author had a way of condensing her words so that she could carry the plot very quickly and still let us inhabit her scenes and characters. Historical mysteries are a passion of mine so I enjoyed learning and wondering as I went along. I also want to add that Ann's treatment of the 'mystical' events of the story was with such naturalness that they could resonate with similar events that--I suspect--most people have had and perhaps have never allowed themselves to validate or talk about.
My wife bought the book for our family to share, but then she also decided to get it on her tablet so she could read it at night while someone else was reading the book. We have all loved it and now have loaned out our book to friends. Great read, wanted to find out what happened next. Could picture the places that were described as if we were there. Great first book, can't wait to read more from this author.
I really enjoyed this book. I really wanted to keep reading to find out what was going to happen next. It was an interesting and unusual plot. I loved the history she wove into the story that clarified some things about The Stone of Scone that I had learned about on my tour of England and Scotland many years ago. A fun read.
I finished the book this morning, which is impressive considering I wasn't expecting to get it from until two days from now! The book is a page turner for sure, and is what I would call a mystery-historical thriller. The first half of the book read like most mysteries and was definitely interesting, but the last half was where things came together and the magic happens. The author kept the tension throughout the ending really well, but still introduced surprise plot twists, made me laugh and worry at different times, and left me with a message about the importance of knowing history that inspired me. I felt like while there were a lot of characters, the author somehow made each of them real and distinct, painted a great picture of people I would love to know and reminded me of people I already did know and miss. I'm so glad I got this book early so I could read it, and I'm excited to read more from this author!
