Death at the Abbey A Lady of Ashes Mystery Christine Trent 9781617736452 Books

Violet Harper is travelling with her husband, Sam. This time they are in Northern England where Sam is using his dynamite expertise in the mining industry. Violet is once again called to her profession as an undertaker to administer to the nobility---only this time it's not a peer but a raven that needs her services. After an elaborate funeral for Aristotle who met his demise choking on a piece of glass, she becomes involved in more than she bargained for.

On this large estate the Duke has been busy. There are tunnels everywhere, skating rinks in progress, holes in the ground, and more staff than one would think necessary even for a large estate. The Duke is eccentric at best but also a philanthropist and takes care of those that have become disenfranchised, including orphans. But there's more to this enterprise than meets the eye. And before long, three more bodies turn up demanding Violet's services. She is also called upon for her investigative skills and this always brings more danger to the mix as she finds herself a victim of an attack.

Sam becomes a part of this investigation and also gets drawn in because the Duke is anxious to procure his services of blasting---making even more tunnels. And the blast also yields another body! What next? Who is the culprit? What is the motive here? And who will be next? Once again the Lady of Ashes mystery doesn't disappoint. The author delves into the history of the period and even uses a known estate and peer as a background for this story. There isn't quite so much of the funereal customs in this episode except for the use of a glass coffin! Did such an item even exist? Apparently.

Death at the Abbey A Lady of Ashes Mystery Christine Trent 9781617736452 Books Reviews

Really enjoy this series.
I love this series. Ms. Trent is wonderful mixing historical events and her characters.
I love this series-in fact, I have recommended it to several people. Ms Trent has the wonderful ability to weave a really fantastic story with a great deal of historical accuracy and make it the kind of book you can't put down.
As always, this sequel did not disappoint! I am so happy to have red this new book in the series! I could not put it down ! The plot is exciting and very satisfying ! Enjoy !
Christine Trent has created an intriguing heroine in Violet Harper. Whose bravery, curiousity respect for decorum and love of good food is a breathe of fresh air in the fascinating era of Victorian London. Her knowledge of historical, cultural and societal events plus interesting characters all intertwine thus making her Lady of Ashes series a delight to read. I was in "mourning" after finishing the last book in the series. More, please?
This is a very intriguing book. I have never had a book with a lady undertaker before as the main character and I am finding it most interesting. Violet is just a great character. The writing is very good and I especially like the food descriptions. I almost want to have a fish pie like Violet was enjoying when the story begin. I also liked reading about all of the roasting chickens. I can't forget the Colonel with his glass eyeball collection. Christine Trent has a terrific imagination. This has been a most enjoyable book.
Another great installment in the Lady of the Ashes series! Christine Trent skillfully and seamlessly weaves historic facts and people into her fictional story. Violet Harper is called to Welbeck Abbey, home of the Duke of Portland, to prepare a body for burial. But the deceased is nothing like what she expected--it's the duke's prized raven--and to make matters worse, the staff see this death as a harbinger of doom. Seems they're right, as more bodies start turning up, and the reclusive duke decides Violet, rather than the police, is the best person to investigate the crimes. The duke proves to be extremely eccentric, but here fact is stranger than fiction. The fifth Duke of Portland, William Cavendish Bentinck, really did do all the odd things we see in the story, including building an elaborate system of tunnels beneath his estate. We see more of Violet's husband, Sam, in this book, and while he's a help to her, she's once again the driving force of the investigation, a strong female character readers can cheer for.
